A record turnout of eighty one members and their guests
celebrated Cape Fear Cyclist’s 40th anniversary as an incorporated club at the
annual General Membership meeting held at the Front Street Brewery on November
15, 2012.
After a social hour and buffet dinner, guest speaker
District Attorney Ben David spoke on his office’s prosecution of the Doolittle
case following the tragic deaths of the father and son cyclists killed on River
Road in April 2011. It was a riveting presentation punctuated by excerpts from
911 calls and “at the scene” pictures as he explained the steps of the prosecution
leading to a conviction of two counts of Second Degree Murder. DA David concluded by detailing important
law changes that have been passed since this tragedy to aid prosecutions in the
future. The audience responded with a
standing ovation.
Following DA David’s presentation Club President Eileen
McConville presented a summary of the Club’s many achievements in 2012. She thanked
the Board of Directors, committee chairs and members and the many volunteers
for their hard work.
President McConville then focused on the Club’s 40th
Anniversary. Cape Fear Cyclists has a rich history as one of the largest cycling
clubs in NC with 425 members and one of the most active in terms of events. Terry
Benjey, a founding club member, introduced all founding members present and recognized
some who could not attend. McConville noted that David Staebler, club historian
emeritus, has completed the first two installments of the Club’s history that
can be found on CFC’s website.
During the year the Club conducted two very successful
fund-raising rides; the Tour de Blueberry in June and the Hot 100 in September.
Together these events had more than 300 participants. The club raised over $3500 which was donated to charities and
cycling supporting organizations:
West Pender Rail Trail Alliance
Cystic Fibrosis Family Support
The New Hanover regional Medical
Center Hospitality House
Cape Fear Southern Off-road
Bicycling Association (CF SORBA)
East Coast Greenway Alliance
Pender County Parks &
Recreation:
The Malpass Corner Elementary School
The chair of the nominating committee, Al Schroetel,
presented the proposed officer slate for 2013; as follows:
President:
Eileen McConville
Vice-President:
Richard Knight
Treasurer: Bob Merz
Secretary: Eileen Aycock
This slate was unanimously approved by all members present
and one absentee ballot.
The evening closed with the award of gift certificates from
Two Wheeler Dealer and Omega Sports. It
was a great evening of fun, fellowship, and celebration.
Fred Campau, Publicity Chairman, CFC
