Another Successful Adopt-a-Highway Cleanup!

In spite of the very cold weather 20 Cape Fear Cyclists completed the quarterly “pick-up” on our two mile section of River Road on Saturday, January 14, 2012.  Cape Fear Cyclists' section for Adopt-a-Highway runs north and south from River Road Park for a mile each way.

We collected 18 bags of highway litter which will be picked up by DOT and 13 bags of recyclables which were taken to a recycling point.

Following the cleanup there were bagels and drinks and award of the two prizes (“Grab-it” pickup and reaching tools) to Guido DeMaere and Jens Andersen who found the yellow CFC bottles.

Something New

The Cape Fear Cyclists now have a new place to shop for CFC Logo apparel.  We have opened a customized store at Lands End Business Outfitters.

http://ocs.landsend.com/cd/frontdoor?store_name=Cape_Fear_Cyclists&store_type=3

At this store you can select from the Lands End catalog, and have our new look logo embroidered for a small charge.  You handle the transaction, pay, and arrange shipping online at this site.  The Club receives no money from the sale, as this site was established as a service to our membership.  If you are ordering caps there are three styles of ball cap, one visor, and a knit cap that are available for individual purchase. Others require a minimum purchase. There is an issue using the Apple Safari browser so the use of Firefox browser is recommended for Apple users to display all item information.  There are frequent specials and sales at Lands End Business Outfitters so we recommend that you sign up for e-mail alerts at

We hope that you take advantage of this service, and our new look logo.

2011 River Road Resolution
CAPE FEAR CYCLISTS RESOLUTION REQUESTING ACTIONS TO IMPROVE CYCLING SAFETY IN THE CAPE FEAR REGION, ESPECIALLY ON RIVER ROAD

WHEREAS, the City of Wilmington, New Hanover County and the other municipalities represented by the Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO) are steadfastly committed to the promotion of safe bicycling for both transportation and recreation; and

WHEREAS, cyclist accidents and deaths have demonstrated an urgent need to take actions to improve cycling safety in the Cape Fear Region, especially on River Road which has the region’s premier bicycle lane,

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Cape Fear Cyclists request that NCDOT, New Hanover County, the City of Wilmington and the WMPO BikePed Committee work cooperatively to take the following actions that will enhance cycling safety:

Speed Limits:  Ensure that the streets and roads shared by bikes and motor vehicles have posted speeds that are consistent with safety. More specifically, request an immediate evaluation of the speed limits on River Road.

Law Enforcement: Ensure that the streets and roads shared by bikes and motor vehicles are routinely patrolled and that posted speeds are enforced, especially on River Road where speeding is prevalent.

Traffic Calming: Take the following specific actions to moderate motor vehicle speeding on streets and roads shared by bikes and motor vehicles, especially on River Road where speeding is prevalent.

Install stop signs or traffic lights at major intersections. Of particular concern at present are the intersections of River Road and Sanders Road and River Road and Halyburton Parkway.

Conduct periodic safety, sobriety and compliance checks on streets and roads shared by bikes and motor vehicles, especially on River Road.

Awareness:

Post additional “Share the Road” and Bike Lane signs, especially on River Road.

Prepare Public Service Announcements (PSAs) for airing on local media

Maintenance: Ensure that existing bicycle lanes are properly maintained, free of gravel, sand and trash and free from encroaching vegetation. Of particular concern are the bike lanes on River Road.

ADOPTED by the Cape Fear Cyclists on April 18, 2011.

Craig R. Mann, President, Cape Fear Cyclists
